"Don't wanna be an American idiot
Don't desire a nation nether the new media
And can you hear the audio of hysteria?
The subliminal mind-f**k America"
The track was written under the presidency of George Due west. Bush, who led America into the Republic of iraq State of war following the 9/11 terrorist assault.
Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong is believed to have found a distaste for cablevision Television set'southward coverage of the war, and has been quoted equally saying: "They had all these Geraldo-similar journalists in the tanks with the soldiers, getting the play-by-play."

With the band themselves revealing the song was written out of anger virtually not beingness represented past the world's leaders, it's not hard to see why American Idiot has get relevant once once more.

The trio visited the Radio 10 studio the twenty-four hours afterward US Election effect, where Armstrong gave his reaction.
Speaking to Chris Moyles, the Skilful Riddance singer revealed: "I went to bed and anybody kinda thought the right side was going to win.
"Then at 6am I wake upward choking - similar this is kinda gross, like when you inhale spit [...] I'k thinking 'oh my god why am I coughing?'
"And of course the first affair I exercise is think 'I'll check and run into what happened'. So I go to my phone and I look and I have 50 messages. And I was like ' this is non adept'. 'Cause usually I get four every day."

While Troubled Times acts every bit an American Idiot for the millennial generation, it seems American Idiot still speaks to audiences of all ages today.
In 2020, Armstrong was yet calling upon the famous song to drive his bulletin home. At the start of September, he shared a lengthy post bankroll Joe Biden for President.
Invoking another American Idiot single Wake Me Up When September Ends and sharing a prune of American Idiot, he wrote: "It'due south September 1st 2020 and I am Wide AWAKE IN AMERICA. This has been the most unprecedented twelvemonth of our lives.

The bulletin seemed to work - Biden was elected the 46th President of the U.s.a. on 3 November. Just the more things change, the more they stay the same. As 2021 rolled on, Biden received criticism over Us troops being withdrawn from Afghanistan and Green Day embarked on the Hella Mega Bout with Weezer and Autumn Out Boy.
